GOOD THINGS THAT HAPPENED WHEN PETS STAYED AT MONTAGE
|
| Cats, especially males, often have urinary tract problems. Because we clean the litter pans everyday we check to make sure they are urinating. Many times a year we spot infections and even total blockages. If those cats had stayed at home or with friends what would happen to them? Some cases would be fatal. |
A Standard Poodle came in one morning that we knew very well. After she
had been here for only a few hours the Care Manager, Deanette told us we
HAD TO TAKE HER TO THE VET RIGHT AWAY! Dean knew she was way too quiet and that something was very wrong.
We rushed her into her Vet who found that she was having kidney
failure. When the client returned I asked if the dog had been vomiting
before she brought her to board (typical symptom). The owner said
"yes, but I thought it was nerves from seeing us pack."
If this beloved dog had stayed at home alone or with strangers she probably would have died in a few days. Instead she got treatment and lived on for
many happy, healthy years. |
Because we can watch the urine and stool of our guests closely we
can often spot things the owners don't see in a grass yard. We can
frequently tell if a dog has a urinary infection.
One memorable case involved a small Lhasa Apso who was staying for 3 weeks. After a couple of days we noticed that she had been urinating frequently and that it had a bad odor. We took her to her Vet who
discovered that she had massive bladder stones. He did surgery and
removed 10 stones the size of apricots! She went home feeling better
than when she came in and made history at her Vet! |
We were caring for a frequent visiting Great Dane who loved rawhide chews with the knots at the end. She consumed one every day. After eating a knot whole (we figured out later) she vomited her food about 4 hours after eating. Vomiting happens from nerves quite often and she was high strung. This happened again the next day. We knew then that she had a block in her intestine from this tell tale symptom.
Just as we were getting ready to go into her Vet for life saving surgery, she was able to throw up the huge, expanded rawhide knot. Many times a dog cannot dislodge items that are blocking an intestine. They die if their caregiver does not see and interpret the symptoms in time.
Needless to say this and a choking incident prompted us to ban any rawhide products for boarding pets. |
