BAD THINGS THAT HAPPENED WHEN PETS STAYED HOME
Before we started Montage we had a cat Florida who had grown up in the woods. We lived on a big parcel, away from the road near Ridgefield. We went to the coast for a few days and left her outside with lots of food. When we returned we immediately regretted that decision. Florida had been beaten up by a Tom cat, had a bite and abscess on her foot and she had come in heat AND was pregnant!
A regular client of ours decided to leave his dogs with a friend. Almost immediately they got loose and ran away. The owner decided that if they
were found that we should take care of them instead. A few hours later
they were picked up RUNNING LOOSE ON HWY 500! We bailed them out
of the pound within an hour and put them in isolation, which was a good
idea. After only 2 hours at the pound they got kennel cough, but they
were alive and safe when the owner returned.
A client of ours with a Miniature Poodle Pepper lived in the country near
their son. They were only going away a few days and decided to leave the
dog home alone. Their son was supposed to go to the house to let the dog
out and feed him regularly. He went over the first night and got distracted
doing some other chores for his parents.

He totally forgot that Pepper was outside and went home.

About 6 hours later he remembered and went to look for Pepper around his house and roads. He found Pepper nearly dead. He had been mauled by a large dog or coyote. Along with the extensive tearing of his skin all the muscles on one side of his chest and throat had been torn loose.

Pepper was a tough little guy! $1,000 and hours of surgery later he recovered to almost his "Old Self". A week after his surgery the owners had to travel for about a week. We took care of Pepper during that time so he wouldn't have to stay in a strange place at the Vet. We flushed and dressed his wounds several time a day, gave him medications and saw first hand how really awful and dangerous leaving a pet alone or with a relative or friend can be.
